The management of the Sunyani Technical University (STU) is to collaborate with the Sunyani Municipal Assembly to control sports betting, which is it feels is alarmingly gaining grounds among university students in the Municipality.
Many of the students at the STU are said to use their tuition fees for sports betting and because of that, many of the students owe the university.
But, Dr Justice Solomon Korantwi-Barimah, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the STU, who told reporters about the decision, said the management had already met with the Student Representative Council (SRC) over the matter.
He expressed regret over the fact that instead of concentrating on their books, many of the students spend time on sports betting, and called for effective collaboration between the Ghana Education Service and relevant institutions to control sports betting among the youth in the country.
Meanwhile, students from the STU and other tertiary institutions highly patronised operations of one of the betting companies, which had opened an outlet opposite the STU’s main campus along the Sunyani-Kumasi highway.
When the GNA visited the betting centre around the University last night, many of the students were busily gambling.
Some of them including female students were seriously glued to their mobile phones, whilst others sought assistance from other colleagues and the operators of the centre.
An attendant at the centre confirmed to the GNA that more than 70 of the university students visit the centre daily for the online sports gambling.
